At its heart, SmartStart is a student-led initiative that aims to improve digital access and confident usage among migrant workers in Dubai. To achieve this, the project brings together different efforts from a fundraising campaign, consequent device distribution and an easy-to-follow guide on digital literacy - to - workshops that explain them in person where participants can ask questions and try new skills; alongside receiving mentorship from student volunteers for tutoring, and continued support, the goal is to help participants build the skills they need to independently navigate digital tools in their daily lives.
To better understand what support is needed the most, SmartStart also plans to conduct short surveys before and after the digital literacy sessions to help track the changes in access, comfort level and use habits to shape its future activities accordingly.Â
